Moving is always an interesting experience. The range of experiences that a person can experience range from absolute disasters to quick and efficient moves. But why is there such a range of outcomes? Quite simply, a lot of people don’t move right. Moving is complicated. You’re taking an entire home to a new location. This means a lot of things will need to be moved with different degrees of security and safety. Any mistakes will lead to a broken piece of furniture or a damaged treasured heirloom. People don’t need to be perfect when they move. But taking advantage of some simple and effective moving tips can make a big difference for people who are perhaps not truly prepared for their move. This article will look at several helpful tips that you can use while moving.

1 - Pack in Advance

For some people this may be common sense, but there’s a huge number of people who leave their packing to the last days before a move. This is a huge mistake. The day of moving needs to be about the actual organization and procedure of the move. If you’re packing more than the toiletries you use in the morning, then you’re packing too much on the day of. Packing in advance lets you focus and keep your move going.

2 - Declutter if Possible

One thing about moving is that it gives you a great chance to look through the things in your life and determine what you really need and what you don’t need. If you start early, you can often sell many of the times you don’t want to bring with you. This can also be helpful if you want to redecorate or update your furniture. The key once again is planning ahead if you can do so. For items that you just don’t want anymore, you can often donate them to a local shelter or retailer. Having a clean new home that lacks clutter is a good way to build your new home feelings.

3 - Label Your Boxes

There’s quite a few things that you can label your boxes with. The first and most important thing should always be the room that it’s going to be heading to in the new home. This can ensure that people aren’t hauling extra boxes up and down stgairs when they don’t need to. You should also label the box with the contents. This doesn’t need to be detailed, but should give a general sense. If something inside a box is fragile, this is important to note as well. Finally, label boxes with a general idea of the weight. This can be an accurate number, a general description from “low” to “heavy” or a rating from 1 to 10. It’s just useful to people about to lift a box knowing what they should expect.

4 - Kitchen Items Are Frustrating

When packing up a home, the kitchen should be a room that takes a long time. Quite simply, the kitchen is full of items that are sharp and dangerous, or easily broken. Dishes, bowls and other items that can break need to be packed with appropriate packing paper wrapping them. After you get a small grouping of these items, they need even more packing paper surrounding them to keep things from breaking. Cardboard dividers are an absolute must if you are moving glasses or other cylindrical glass items. In some cases, you can pack cup inside of bowls, or other hollowed out items. Be creative, but make sure you use enough packing paper to ensure nothing is shifting and everything is protected.

5 - Be Careful with Electronics

Many people treat electronic equipment like any other furniture. However, your television, computer monitors and laptops can all be easily damaged. Ideally if you have a large flatscreen TV, you may still have the box and the packing that it came in. This is already designed to perfectly fit and protect the television. If that’s not the case, then you should look for a wooden crate that can provide padding and safety to all sides of the television while being strong enough to avoid breaking and exposing the sensitive electronics within.
